Onshore Classic 2014
About to enter the water for my heat in the Onshore Classic on Easter Sunday a bloke asked me “ what tricks are you going to do”? I said that I’ll be just happy to catch a few waves. He no doubt asked because beforehand there had been a lot of impressive action in the clubs annual longboard event.
The first trick was Max Lazarus paddling out with Steves dog on the front, and then both of them surfing a wave in! That got everyones attention so Shayleigh Chapman and her pint sized niece Lucy Naylor paddled out on the tandem board. They caught a wave and halfway in Shayleigh lifted Lucy up onto her shoulders and rode like that to the beach. Not only was the crowd hooting and clapping in appreciation but Im sure most thought they were back in the 60s.
The new deck at the front beach came alive with colour and movement. Ian( Ducky) Duckworth took the creativity up to a new level this year filling the deck with his trophies, totem poles and other creations, that bewildered some but put a smile on everyones face.
As the heats progressed there was a good mix of progressive and traditional styles of long boarding. Dean Mitchell was throwing the 9 footer around with ease, like it was a shortboard, and as usual found a barrel where no-one else did. Graeme Slade, the reigning champ, surfed well early with all the classic drop knee turns and walking the board moves that we are used to. Hayden Cohen, Tim Edwards, Lucy Walsh, Shayleigh, Blizz and Max all surfed well to get to the semis but it was Phippsy that had a field day and brought it home. 360s, reverse take-offs, nose-rides, a wave ridden almost totally backwards( who says we aren’t having fun!!) and some traditional carving from way out the back, gave Mark a well deserved win.
Thank you to Ducky from us all for bringing the sunshine!
